In 1986, Derwenthaugh Coke Works was closed and demolition work began. A strange discovery halts the regeneration plans. As there is no obvious explanation as to why the various artefacts should be there, the police become involved. The only clue which offers any progress points to events which took place many years ago. Just when a young police officer thinks she has seen something similar to one of the objects, and a new line of inquiry looms, higher authority descends on the investigation. The intrigue thickens.

This was cleverly written so the complicated story was easily deciphered with the help of the characters in the book. The plot was good, as were the characters. The dialogue was at times stilted to convey information. The punctuation was careless in often using a comma instead of writing a new sentence or two. There were one or two minor inconsistencies. Despite these drawbacks, I loved the story.

The Man Who Never Was eBook Hylton Smith Reviews

The detective aspects of this work were OK, some was very good, and the concept of investigating a 40 year old cold case - and setting it 25 years in the past was good.

However this is supposedly set after VE day and apparently before VJ day. Yet the author has characters talking about (1) 1945 German authorities (2) a 'cease-fire' and (3) Nuclear powerplants when none existed nor the public aware of nuclear power generation. Germany was under Military Occupation Government after the unconditional surrender (not a cease-fire) in May 1945 and the de-Nazification program was operating so there was no "German government". The espionage was supposedly based on German gathering of fuel and electronic control data which was of little historical sense.

The conspiracy aspect was to revolve around 1987 "drone technology" and supposedly there were secrets involved that justified a 'wet work operation' against several of the characters. This was a termendous stretch! The German's were the war-time leaders of remote piloted bombs, such as the Fritz-X, while US research was a poor second and this was not a major area for the UK. What information that could be gathered from the war-time German efforts were public knowledge by 1987. While some areas the Anglo-American electronic warfare (especially radar) was superior to the German this was certainly not true in either remote control or liquid fuel.

Today's UAV's (or drones) are less like what is hinted at than today's cruise missles. In either case the supposition that there was some WWII secrets that justified the extent of such a cover-up is just a stretch too far. There were several large holes as to why British counter-intelligence did not "roll-up" this particular ring in late 1944 or early 1945 when there was no tactical or strategic reason not to.

The logic of not notifying the police, by MI5, that the body was that of a Nazi agent executed in 1945, is not evident to me. While the German authorities had surrendered a still active agent was subject to summary justice and a tribunal record could have easily been created. None of the primary personnel were still alive during the 1987 events so there was little legal action justified. While the story hung on this "official cover-up" the logic is missing.

Overall I would give this actually a 2 and a half stars (if ratings allowed) due to the plot points above but it was a nice read. The tying together of the various characters was well done, if somewhat sketchy, but more character and personal development of the 1987 characters would have been nice.

For a free book I would recommend reading it as a light diversion, keeping in mind its flaws.
It was well written and took me back to the war days when we had GERMAN PRISONERS OF WAR not too far from where stayed.( a friend of my parents married one) Th author really did his homework It had a family feel about it
I enjoyed it and it wasn't the usual kind of book where everyone is hopping in and out of bed every 2 minutes
In England 1987, a body is found in the concrete in an old factory.
Who was he? Why was he buried there? It's up to DI Black to
find out with the help of Maggie Reichart to discover who he was.
It becomes apparent during the investigation that the body has
something to do with events during World War II. Why were
German POWs in England? Or was a well-thoughout plot
in the works? And what does an English family in 1945 have
to do with the POW's? Read and find out. Must read.
Decent concept, but not smoothly executed. Liked the plot, but too many leaps in deduction that didn't really fit. So at times hard to follow how all the plot lines fit. Tried to infuse some personality into the characters, but never really allowed them to flesh out. All in all an entertaining read for free. Didn't feel totally cheated by conclusion.
The idea is interesting and intriguing but the author's poor writing skills detract from the book. For example, it is filled with cliches and the characters don't speak like real people, which makes them unbelievable. It also includes events that don't appear connected to the plot, such as injuries to the young boy character. Based on the author's name and the dedication to people with the same names as characters, the book appears semi-autobiographical. Did anyone edit it?
Who was that person found buried under a concrete slab? I wasn't able to figure it out till near very end of story. Good application of "suspense"!!!!!  .
In 1986, Derwenthaugh Coke Works, in northern England, was closed and demolition work began. During the work a skeleton is discovered under a large concrete foundation slab. The slab was poured in 1945. So the skeleton dates from that period, the end of World War II.

This is the story of the identification of the skeleton, the entire story of who it was and why it was put there – plus the rather large effect the discovery has on certain people of 1986 England. Therefore there are numerous time changes between 1945 and 1986 throughout the book. Some readers might not care that type of tale; but I fully enjoyed it.

I guess I was really in the mood for just such a book. There is a touch of history that has been unknown to most of us living in the United States. I’m always fascinated with little bits of history (from any period) that I learn from my reading of novels.

I gave the book 5 stars. I hope the majority of readers enjoy it as much as I did,
