World War II was almost over. A young teenage boy on a summer seashore vacation wasn't thinking of the millions of people who had died from that conflict. His only concern was to diligently follow the dictates of an overly scrupulous conscience. Yet events occur that make him face memories he had repressed of the previous summer, when he had different priorities. A young man who takes an interest in him helps to bring this out, as does an older, sexually precocious teenage girl.

The sad life of the young protagonist is gut wrenching! From being obsessed by the idiotic strictures of his catholic faith as well as having to confess his sins of masturbation to an apparently abusive priest (who himself is apparently masturbating while hearing those confessions) to dealing with his abusive alcoholic parents, one can only feel deeply sorry for the teenager's plight. It was a quick read which is difficult to put down once you are swept into the murderous intrigue of the base story line. Another Semken delightful portrayal!Product details

Forgotten Summer Frederick Semken 9781523822706 Books Reviews
Frederick Semken's latest novel is a well-written sensitive portrait of a boy in his late teens experiencing the anguish of growing up. He is consumed by religious guilt and parents who are unaware of his distress. The story is set in a beach community during one summer; the descriptions of the loneliness and the beauty of the ocean and sand are very vivid. One can almost hear the waves crashing on the shore. The young man has taken his Catholic teaching too seriously such that even sexual thoughts, not actual experiences, cause him grief. While many teachings of the Church can be comforting, we learn in "Forgotten Summer" the results of sexual repression can thwart the growing up process.
Forgotten Summer is set in a small, beach front community during the summer months around the time of the 2nd World War. The story centers, in a sad and compelling way, around a young protagonist - an only child he's emotionally battered by his dysfunctional parents, scarred by deep feelings of guilt and shame that seem tied to his Catholic upbringing, and confusion about his own sexuality. Semken takes us into the mind of this confused young man and though the boy's actions and lack of real engagement with the world do little to earn our sympathy, his neglect and the void of any positive influences in his life earn our regard in this writer's skillful hands. Only Trudy, a wild, adventurous young woman seems to be aware of the "kids" alienation and offers him some hope and promise, although the "kid" never seems to know what to do with it. Semken creates unforgettable characters that still haunt me, months after reading his book.
